Hermes Skyflex Improves SCPC satellite performance by 30%
Hermes Skyflex automatically allocates bandwidth as required between two or more VSAT nodes.
"Satellite space is very expensive" explains Gary Steer of Hermes. "But it is also very flexible". Whereas a traditional point-to-point link runs in both directions at a fixed and usually equal speed. Skyflex adapts to the actual data required on both sides.
A single satellite carrier is dynamically shared between two or more sites to meet the actual requirement. This dynamic response to the "burstiness" of WAN traffic, enables a transmitting site to utilise space bandwidth far more efficiently and allocation is based on simple rules.
As with all such systems, there is a cost in terms of bandwidth overhead - Skyflex is only around 7% - but this is easily offset by the increased bandwidth utilisation.
On a typical SCPC link this translates up to a 30% improvement in performance, with users experiencing faster file transfer in both directions.
